I did feel a bit sorry for him though, as it can’t be easy living with someone who has been through, and is still going through, so much. I’m not surprised, given her past, that she’s paranoid about her husband. I could almost physically feel her pain and frustration. To feel so petrified most of the time must be absolutely exhausting, especially when others think you’re losing the plot. She is convinced Charlotte is too scared to wake up and the truth as to why is shocking. To make matters worse, Sue has a past she fears is catching up with her and she is scared, but she is determined to find out what led Charlotte to attempt to end her life. It seems she stepped in front of it on purpose, but what would drive a seemingly happy 15 year old to do such a thing? As a parent of teenagers, I can’t even imagine how I would cope in the same situation. Their daughter, Charlotte, is in a coma having been hit by a bus. ![]() ![]() ![]() In The Accident we meet Sue who, along with her husband, is dealing with the most heartbreaking situation. This is the first book I’ve read by C L Taylor and I’m not sure how I’ve managed that, but it most certainly won’t be the last! ![]()

![]() ![]() It was a messy, titillating, anxiety-inducing romantic spiral that invested me in the story from line one. ![]() I honestly feel like the excellence of this novel was undersold. Nevertheless, the story I found within these pages was deliciously complex. I wasn’t expecting a lofty literary read with this novel, Emezi themself having made it clear that You made a Fool of Death with your Beauty is a romance book that’s unlike the literary and speculative books they published before. For years, I shied away.īut this year, I resolved to banish my timidity and tackle Emezi’s work from behind, sinking claws and teeth into their most recent publication and romance debut You made a Fool of Death with your Beauty, which was published in May 2022. It was hard not to feel ill-equipped to even try to ride their literary tempest. They have been busy, and astonishingly successful. Since then, they have published six more critically acclaimed books, three of which were published in 2022 alone. They have bounced from genre to genre, storyform to storyform, leaving ground-breaking and provocative work in their wake since their debut novel Freshwater shook the literary world in 2018. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Once again, we reached out to TV stars, creators, and critics - from multihyphenates like Natasha Lyonne, Ben Stiller, and Pamela Adlon to actors like Jon Hamm and Lizzy Caplan as well as the minds behind shows like The X-Files, Party Down, and Jane the Virgin - to sort through television’s vast and complicated history. So, we decided to update our list of television’s all-time best offerings, originally compiled in 2016. How do you identify the very best series in a medium that’s been commercially available since the end of World War II? Especially when that medium has experienced more radical change in the nine years between the finales of Breaking Bad and its prequel, Better Call Saul, than it did in the 60-odd years separating Walter White from Milton Berle? The current Peak TV era is delivering us 500-plus scripted shows per year, many of them breaking boundaries in terms of how stories are told and who’s doing the telling. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Top 30 Quotes from Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action If we learn to start with the WHY, and we are disciplined, we can all become inspiring leaders, or at least this is what Sinek tell us in his book. How to be an inspiring leader, according to Sinek, can be learned, it is not limited to “natural-born leaders”. But then, the discovery of the WHY, he says, “Changed my view of the world and … restored my passion to a degree multiple times greater than at any other time in my life”. It may have happened to you at some point in your life also. Simon Sinek explains in the preface of his book that he “discovered” the importance of WHY at a time when he had fallen out of love with his work. Only the Why can inspire people to follow you or buy your products. ![]() ![]() Said in other words, it means that why you do something is a lot more important than what you do or even how you do it. Why certain leaders or companies are successful, and others are not? Because “ people don’t buy what you do they buy why you do it.” It’s a simple idea but it carries important consequences, if you believe in it. Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action is a great book about leaders and leadership by Simon Sinek. ![]() ![]() Tracking delivery Saver Delivery: Australia postĪustralia Post deliveries can be tracked on route with eParcel. ![]() NB All our estimates are based on business days and assume that shipping and delivery don't occur on holidays and weekends. A particular type of negative review has emerged from the Left of British politics, which has been surprising to me given my involvement with the British Labour Party prior to 2018. Despite that progress on the fringes of intellectual thought, there is still widespread resistance to even discuss the topic, which was reflected by many of the book reviews of Deep Adaptation. ![]() Over that year, the idea of societies breaking down has become a little less taboo within research circles, with the emergence of terms like ‘ polycrisis’ to describe the contemporary situation where a variety of societal disruptions are interacting – health, inflation, conflict – to threaten the capability of people, organisations and governments to comprehend and respond. Soon it will be a year since the book I co-edited on ‘Deep Adaptation’ to the coming breakdown of industrial consumer societies, mainly due to environmental stress, was published by Polity. ![]() ![]() ![]() A schoolmaster will prefer to have a couple of dumbheads in his class than a single genius, and if you regard it objectively, he is of course right. As far as teachers are concerned, they define young geniuses as those who are bad, disrespectful, smoke at fourteen, fall in love at fifteen, can be found at sixteen hanging out in bars, read forbidden books, write scandalous essays, occasionally stare down a teacher in class, are marked in the attendance book as rebels, and are budding candidates for room-arrest. Anyone with a touch of genius seems to his teachers a freak from the very first. A certain streak of genius makes an ominous impression on them, for there exists a deep gulf between genius and the teaching profession. “Teachers dread nothing so much as unusual characteristics in precocious boys during the initial stages of their adolescence. ![]() ![]() ![]() In 1966, she moved to New York City to attend Cooper Union and while there became enmeshed in the downtown countercultural milieu, experimenting with drugs and hanging out with musicians including members of the Fugs.
